    Women's Self Defense

Today I came across a facebook post that told this story : A woman, who usually brings her dog on her morning walk, was instead walking alone with her young son. She noticed a red SUV slowing down as it approached them. When she looked at the SUV , a man, about 20 - 30 years old, rolled down the passenger window and stared at her. She was scared, but had no where to hide, so she kept walking with her son by her side. The SUV drove past her and pulled in to a driveway ahead of them, then the man got out and headed toward them. As she saw the SUV stopping , she remembered that there was a police station 2 blocks away, and she told her son : RUN. They were lucky - they were able to get to ....

  • Jiu Jitsu From A Parents Perspective.

Jiu Jitsu From A Parents Perspective.

Before jujitsu, our son, tried many different sports, but did not want to stick with most of them; baseball was too slow moving, he was a head shorter than most of the kids in basketball, and he was too tiny for football. His father and I insisted that he be involved in something that kept him active. Due to his smaller size, we were also concerned about bullying and wanted to enroll him in something that would help him learn self-defense, in case that ever became an issue, which fortunately, it has not. After looking into our options, we decided to try jujitsu, which my husband had heard great things about. Our son has been with Still Waters for almost two years now and he loves it. ....

Competition: Why do I love it ?

Competition: Why do I love it ? ( aka why would you want to get smashed in front of hundreds of complete strangers ) If you asked most people what they like to do for fun on the weekends, they would probably not answer : step onto a stage in front of hundreds of people to fight with a complete stranger! But it is one of my favorite activities. For many, Jiu Jitsu competition can be intimidating. After all, the person you are up against has been training hard too... preparing to get out there and throw , pin, sweep, choke, arm bar, leg lock, or wrist lock you into submission. There is a chance you could lose … in front of a huge audience. So why do we do it? Training ....

  • Why Jiu Jitsu? (Young at 44)

Why Jiu Jitsu? (Young at 44)

    Why?
The easy answer : because I can. If you ask 50 people the question: Why did you start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ? you will get 50 different answers. If you ask those same people the question : Is there anything that you regret about training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? You will usually only get one or two different answers, and the most common answer ( by a long shot) is " My only regret is that I didn't start sooner" . Don't believe me? just join any Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/ BJJ Facebookgroup and ask them yourself! So, Why did a 42 year old veterinarian and mother with two young children decide to use her precious free time to train BJJ? That is a story that started ....
